Dear Dr. Washington,
As another follow-up to our lunch at the City Club in August, I would
like to once again propose that we put our heads together and come up with
ways to further the partnership which I proposed between Smith Barney and
the African American Community in Los Angeles. A quick review of the points
we discussed at the luncheon included:
- Smith Barney would like to increase it's prescence in the black community
in the hopes of hiring qualified applicants for our Financial Consultant
Training Program;
- Educational programs should be implemented in the community in order
to educate the public with respect to investing stocks, bonds, mutual funds,
retirement planning, IRA's, educational funding, etc. It was suggested
that these programs be presented in a free seminar format to be held at
local churches, schools and community centers;
- You, as the highly visible community leaders, offered to assist in
the referral process of qualified individuals to Smith Barney for employment
consideration in our training program. These candidates would typically
be college educated professionals who are successful in their current careers
but interested in investigating a career in the financial services industry.
There was a general willingness among all to directly refer individuals
for a career seminar;
- Lastly, education for students was a topic that was widely endorsed.
Smith Barney is happy to send qualified representatives to speak at high
school assemblies or church groups as an introduction to investing as well
as an explanation of career opportunities in financial services;
There was a general consensus that any speakers we supply be African
American. We have now assembled these professionals who are ready to implement
our program.
I would like you to give these ideas some thought as to how we can work
together in implementing these initiatives. If you can supply the people
(and possibly the venue) we are ready to provide the programs. Please call
me with feedback at your earliest convenience.
Please contact the offices of the Los Angeles NAACP if you wish to
take advantage of this exciting opportunity.
